Crypto: Vitalik Buterin’s cry of warning against memecoins

Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of crypto Ethereum, recently expressed his displeasure with the rise of celebrity-backed memecoins. In a series of tweets and a detailed blog post, Buterin advocates for a more responsible and meaningful approach to financialization in the cryptocurrency space.

Celebrity Memecoins: An Ephemeral Fashion?

Memecoins, these cryptocurrencies often launched on a whim and supported by influential figures, have invaded the market.

However, according to Buterin, these projects sorely lack substance and longevity. Take the example of the $MOTHER token, launched by Australian rapper Iggy Azalea. Although this memecoin has attracted attention, it has also sparked accusations of fraud and insider trading.

Buterin did not mince his words when expressing his dissatisfaction: “I am very unhappy with the 'celebrity experimentation' of this cycle. » For him, financialization must serve a worthy objective, such as health, open-source software or art, and not be an end in itself. This statement highlights a fundamental divergence between Buterin's vision and the current memecoin trend.

Celebrity-backed memecoins, according to Buterin, contribute little to innovation or real value. They mainly focus on price speculation, often forgetting the fundamentals of blockchain and cryptos. This trend, coupled with ethical issues like racist overtones in some memecoins on Solana, makes the situation worse.

Towards a more responsible crypto financialization

Faced with this proliferation of insignificant projects, Buterin offers alternatives focused on public good objectives. In his bloghe returns to a 2013 article where he suggested that the issuance of tokens could finance important public projects.

Buterin highlights examples like “charity coins”, like “GiveWell Inu” and “Fable of the Dragon Tyrant”, which aim to support public goods. “GiveWell Inu,” for example, was created to donate funds to GiveWell, a charitable organization, while “Fable of the Dragon Tyrant” funds cultural projects related to research on aging.

He also advocates positive-sum financial games, where participants, particularly the most modest, can emerge winners. Axie Infinity, with its play-to-earn model, is a convincing example, allowing low-income users to benefit financially from their participation in the game.

The Importance of Sustainability

For Buterin, a crypto project worthy of respect must aim for sustainability. He emphasizes that projects should be designed to last at least ten years, in order to guarantee lasting value and avoid quickly fading into oblivion.

This vision of sustainability is crucial in an ecosystem where many projects disappear as quickly as they appear. By emphasizing longevity, Buterin calls for a reconsideration of priorities in the development of cryptos.

Buterin also warns of the rise of scams in the crypto industry. He discusses the linguistic and cultural nuances that can make certain projects suspect. For example, terms like “DAO” can be misinterpreted, contributing to misunderstandings and fraud.

As the world of crypto continues to evolve, Buterin's call for more responsible and meaningful crypto resonates strongly. The question remains: will the industry be able to listen and adapt for a more promising future? The ball is now in the court of developers and investors.
