The crypto world in Russia is currently going through a most tumultuous period. On the one hand, the controversial national exchange Beribit is rocked by a high-profile scandal involving millions of missing dollars. On the other hand, the State Duma is seriously considering the adoption of a draconian law outright banning cryptocurrency exchange platforms. A regulatory storm that could permanently redefine the crypto landscape in Russia.
The Beribit scandal comes to light
This is a matter that quickly took on worrying proportions for the entire Russian ecosystem. At the end of March, in an already tense atmosphere following the terrorist attack on Crocus City Hall, the authorities launched a heavy-handed raid targeting the offices of Beribit, one of the country's main crypto exchange platforms.
Quickly, the leaders publicly recognized “irregularities” within the company’s accounts, requiring an emergency audit. An announcement which only fueled the discontent of some crypto users, convinced of being victims of a vast scam.
The situation then escalated spectacularly when more than 50 angry customers burst into the Beribit premises. Demanding the immediate repayment of more than $4 million in assets. Some were vaguely reassured about a 15-day deadline for a possible settlement.
Crypto regulation: The Duma drives the point home!
While this extremely tense situation shook the Russian crypto world, a regulatory thunderclap added to the ambient uncertainty. Indeed, seizing the opportunity of a degraded climate, several deputies submitted to the Duma a muscular bill aimed at outright banning cryptocurrency exchange platforms on Russian territory.
If adopted, this text would represent a real earthquake for local industry. However, in return, individual transactions as well as mining registered with the authorities would remain authorized. But beyond these accommodations, the global ban on exchanges would undeniably constitute a significant setback for crypto adoption in Russia.
It is undeniable that the situation in Russia is currently extremely tense for the emerging cryptocurrency sector. On the one hand, the scandal surrounding Beribit discredits the overall image of the sector. On the other, the specter of anti-crypto exchange legislation looms large, threatening to suffocate any prospect of lasting development. However, some voices are already being raised within the Duma to oppose this potential ban. Arguing that such a measure would seriously harm Russia's strategic interests, these pro-crypto deputies are still trying to influence the course of the legislative process.
