Bitcoin's bull rally reignites a burning controversy among cryptocurrency investors. With a meteoric rise in power in recent months, the domination of the queen of cryptos on the global market is fueling two camps with radically opposing visions. On the one hand, some predict a massive increase in this hegemony. But others assert on the contrary that this is the swan song of Bitcoin, condemned to give ground in the face of competition from altcoins in the long term.
The reasons for a new era of Bitcoin dominance
Bitcoin’s recent all-time highs only reinforce the beliefs of its most ardent supporters. For them, the ascending triangle formed on the dominance charts is only the prelude to a new bullish tide. Like Benjamin Cowen, who considers that “the Bitcoin domination train is about to leave the station”.
The famous analyst Beanie goes even further, believing that the current scenario is strangely reminiscent of the bear market of 2018. “At the time, the preference was for Bitcoin, a safe haven offering more stability than altcoins,” underlines the investor. This suggests, according to Beanie, an imminent rise in Bitcoin domination beyond the current 50%.
The warning signs of a historic decline?
However, the opposition does not disarm in the face of maximalist theses of Bitcoin. Among the most virulent critics, analyst Zero Ika points to a very long-term downward trend. “The logarithmic chart unambiguously shows that Bitcoin dominance is part of an overall decline when we take a step back,” says the trader.
This rhetoric resonates favorably with investors convinced of the inevitable rise of decentralized alternatives. For them, the advent of blockchains that are more scalable, energy efficient and offering new use cases is the promise of a rebalancing of the forces involved.
In addition, many warn of the risks of too much concentration of the crypto market around a single asset. A scenario which would reinforce the regulatory threat hovering over the sector according to these skeptics.
If current figures prove bitcoiners right, history could well prove them wrong in the long term. In this raging war of interpretations, each side puts forward its arguments in the hope of having the last word. One thing is certain: the next few months promise to be decisive in deciding between the hypothesis of a prolonged reign or the end of a long cycle of domination of Bitcoin. In the meantime, investors will have to deal with this high volatility in a market that is more fragmented than ever.
