Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, the second-largest blockchain in the world, said he is enthusiastic about the progress of “Verkle trees” on the network. This disruptive technology promises to be revolutionary for staking on Ethereum.
Ethereum Co-Founder Eager for Verkle Trees
In a tweet published this morning, Vitalik Buterin expressed his impatience with the imminent integration of Verkle trees.
“I’m really looking forward to the Verkle trees. They will enable stateless validator clients to operate, allowing staking nodes to validate with virtually zero storage and syncing instantly“, he rejoiced.
Concretely, this data structure based on zero-disclosure proofs (zkSNARKs) will make it possible to validate blocks without having to store the entire Ethereum blockchain. Hence substantial savings in disk space to run a node.
Verkle trees are based on a new format of small “proofs”, allowing the validity of blocks to be certified without downloading raw data from the blockchain. A real revolution in terms of efficiency.
A drastic reduction in disk space required
In addition to storage savings, the arrival of Verkle trees on Ethereum will have other clear advantages. It will thus make it possible to strengthen the decentralization of the network, by reducing the barriers to entry to become a validator.
Above all, the synchronization time of new nodes with the blockchain will be drastically reduced. This will facilitate the arrival of new players validating transactions.
Finally, the user experience of solo staking will be greatly improved. Anyone will be able to validate Ethereum blocks without mobilizing enormous storage capacities.
The Ethereum community therefore seems to have immense hopes in this revolutionary technical update. If developers manage to deploy Verkle trees as anticipated, this could significantly increase the decentralization and accessibility of the blockchain. And this, at the dawn of the highly anticipated “Dancun” upgrade which is looming next March.
