In an exclusive interview with CNBC, SEC Chairman Gary Gensler hinted that the agency could approve Bitcoin spot ETFs in January. This would mark a change from previous rejections, driven by recent court rulings.
Gensler Confirms Approval of Bitcoin Spot ETFs in January
In an exclusive Dec. 14 interview with CNBC, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Gary Gensler provided revealing indications that the regulator could approve funds traded in exchange (ETF) Bitcoin Spot in January 2023.
This statement suggests a possible change in position from the SEC’s previous attitude, which had repeatedly rejected these types of approval requests. However, Gensler recognized that recent court decisions from the District of Columbia courts have forced the SEC to “reexamine the issue from a new perspective.”
“ In the past, we have rejected a number of these requests. Now we are looking at the matter differently in light of these court decisions” , did he declare.
Additionally, Gensler clarified that the SEC is currently reviewing between 8 and 12 applications for Bitcoin spot ETFs. Although he didn’t specify which ones, he was likely referring to high-profile petitions filed by big-name asset managers like BlackRock, Fidelity and Grayscale.
Approval would pave way for massive influx
If the SEC gives the green light, it would open the door to massive institutional investments in Bitcoin via regulated and easily accessible vehicles.
Indeed, currently, many institutions are hesitant to venture into the crypto space due to the lack of regulatory clarity and the challenges of directly holding Bitcoin.
Certainly, approved cash ETFs would be a complete game-changer and likely trigger an unprecedented influx of capital from pension funds, insurance companies and traditional wealth managers.
Although cautiously optimistic, the market remains attentive to the SEC’s next steps. Approval in January would certainly propel Bitcoin and the entire crypto sector to new all-time highs.
Gensler’s comments signal a possible softening of the SEC’s stance on spot Bitcoin ETFs. If approvals come to fruition in January, as industry observers hope, it would open the floodgates to a massive influx of institutional capital, radically transforming the crypto landscape.
