While the former number 1 of Binance had attracted the favor of federal judge Alison Nathan, American prosecutors are worried about a risk of flight. According to them, $175 million bail is not enough to guarantee the presence of CZ in the United States. The DOJ even goes so far as to point out:
- Zhao’s close ties with the United Arab Emirates,
- the absence of an extradition treaty between the two countries.
This situation creates a crucial dilemma. If the former CEO of Binance decides to stay in the United Arab Emirates after his authorized departure, the American government will have to admit that it could not ensure his return. The question of financial responsibility and guarantees of its presence during legal proceedings therefore finds itself at the heart of this tense debate.
Why is the DOJ challenging the federal judge’s decision?
THE concerns of US prosecutors are anchored in Changpeng Zhao’s family and financial ties to the United Arab Emirates. Indeed, the former CEO of Binance has three young children and a partner there. The DOJ is concerned that once she returns to her home country, Zhao may choose not to return to the United States to face possible prison time.
That’s not all ! Most of the Binance founder’s personal fortune is located overseas, outside of US jurisdiction. The question of the government’s ability to seize these assets in the event of a potential leak therefore complicates the situation.
