Switzerland: Welcome land for crypto?

While the European and American crypto markets continue to suffer from regulators’ rigidity, Switzerland is taking an entirely different crypto approach. The federation displays an ever stronger commitment to the crypto market, with an attractive environment favorable to initiative and innovation. Within its borders, it is home to a growing number of crypto service providers and cryptocurrency mining companies. After distinguishing itself as a financial hub, is Switzerland also becoming a welcoming land for crypto? Decryption.

Switzerland: zero tax on crypto purchases and sales

For the Swiss authorities, the course of action is clear: make Switzerland a welcoming land for cryptocurrencies and blockchain. Indeed, with the large financial volumes that they manage, crypto companies need a legal environment that allows them to carry out their activities with complete peace of mind.

In Europe and the United States, they must operate with regulatory uncertainty and inflexibility. Switzerland stands out for its flexible and clear crypto regulations. It is also at the top of the ranking of countries qualified as crypto tax havens.

It applies zero taxation on capital gains from cryptocurrency purchase and sale operations. This is also the case for Estonia, Malta, Greece, Cyprus and Slovenia, where the tax rate is zero. Even in Germany, the rate is zero within a certain limit.

On the other hand, in countries like Denmark, the crypto tax varies from 37 to 52.06% in 2023. In Sweden and Portugal, it is 30% and 28% respectively. The European average is around 15.4%.

Wealth taxes ranging from 0.3% to 1%

In Switzerland, the law equates the purchase and sale of payment tokens with transactions carried out with traditional means of payment. Thus, the purchase and sale of cryptocurrencies are absolutely free of any tax.

However, it should be noted that the Federal Tax Administration (AFC), which deals with tax matters, has provided for taxation in certain cases. Thus, there is a wealth tax which varies from 0.3% to 1% depending on the canton.

A federal income tax for individuals was also planned. It must not exceed the limit of 11.5% and applies to salaries received in crypto and to income generated by staking, mining and DeFi.

Switzerland also clearly strives to minimize regulatory requirements and paperwork, while ensuring compliance with the law. New promises to ease conditions were recently made by regulators to this effect. We can therefore understand why large crypto companies are collaborating with Swiss cities for the adoption of bitcoin.

Zug Crypto Valley: the Silicon Valley of crypto in Switzerland

As the ultimate proof of its pro-crypto character, the Swiss federation has created its Crypto Valley since 2013, a crypto version of Californian Silicon Valley. Crypto Valley was established in the canton of Zug where tax payments in bitcoin and ether have been possible for several years.

Thus, to date, you can make payments in BTC and ETH up to the limit of 1.5 million Swiss francs. What is more interesting is that since the second quarter of 2023, Crypto Valley has introduced innovation in crypto payments.

This is the possibility of paying taxes in crypto simply by scanning the QR code printed on the slips issued by the tax authorities. Although Zug is not the originator of paying taxes in bitcoin, its bold initiatives for adoption have made it the crypto capital of Switzerland.

That said, if the Crypto Valley of Zug has long been the pride of Switzerland, the city of Neuchâtel seems to want to steal the spotlight. This year, for example, three bitcoin mining companies were created in Neuchâtel, with a total of more than 3.7 million euros raised.

These are the Cleansat Mining Alpha, Beta and Omega companies. Likewise, several events are being organized in Neuchâtel around blockchain and crypto technologies. According to statistics from June 2022, almost a dozen Swiss municipalities accept tax payment in bitcoin and ether. The other factor that makes the territory a welcoming land is Seba Bank.

Seba Bank: the Swiss crypto bank that wants to conquer the world

Created in 2018, the powerful Swiss crypto bank Seba Bank has made Switzerland one of the big players in the global crypto scene. Fully regulated by national regulators, it offers simplified access to services such as DeFi, trading, staking and custody of crypto assets and NFTs.

Seba Bank supports bitcoin, bitcoin cash, ether, ethereum classic, litecoin, stellar lumens, USDC stablecoin, etc. The bank was also recognized at the 2022 Digital Wealth Management Impact Awards in the best digital asset offering category. Earlier in the same year, she had already received two major distinctions.

Despite this, Seba Bank continues to make immense efforts to consolidate its presence around the world. Today, it already has a license which allows it to offer services in Abu Dhabi.

Most recently, in August 2023, it received approval in principle to operate in the Hong Kong market. It offers management and consulting services on digital assets.

Clearly, we can say that Switzerland is organizing itself to also be a welcoming land for crypto. If it comes after Hong Kong in adoption, its bold CBDC plan could further solidify its position on the global stage. Obviously, the regulator will have to be more cooperative.
