Bitcoin (BTC): A miner reimburses excess transaction fees to Paxos

One handling error, and the damage is done. A few days ago, an incredible story shook the crypto market: Paxos paid more than $500,000 in transaction fees for a transfer of 0.074 bitcoin (BTC). While the rantings were going well, the news broke. The money was returned.

In short :

  • A few days after its unfortunate mistake, Paxos comes into possession of the $500,000 in overpayments paid in a transaction
  • the bitcoin miner who received the funds did not fail to express his frustration, asking his subscribers what they would have done in his place.

Presumably Paxos is in possession of its funds again

Five days after his mistake, Paxos finally came into possession of his funds. As a reminder, the financial company specializing in blockchain paid around $500,000 in fees for a transfer of $2,000 in bitcoin (BTC). News that shook the crypto ecosystem and left room for much speculation. Among other things, some thought that the error came from PayPal while others opted instead for an error of concentration.

Despite the unusual situation, Paxos wanted to take stock. He announced on September 13 that the online payment giant had nothing to do with it. According to his statements, the transaction was carried out on his server. Therefore, users need not have any fear as their funds are safe. Shortly after this revelation, bitcoin explorer Mempool confirmed that the funds were returned on September 15.

An error that calls for more vigilance in the crypto ecosystem

The crypto ecosystem is subject to several variations. With the number of followers increasing every day, there is no shortage of errors. Indeed, Paxos is not the only one to have paid the price. Earlier this year, Crypto.com could have caused the loss of more than $10 million without the help of local law enforcement.

Even though Paxos’ transaction error doesn’t seem as serious as the exchange’s, that doesn’t change the fact that vigilance is required in this industry. In the meantime, bitcoin (BTC) continues its upward trend. The price of BTC has been showing green indicators for a few days and we hope that this trend continues.

After agreeing to repay the funds to Paxos, the bitcoin miner who received them did not fail to express his frustration on X, formerly Twitter. But all’s well that ends well. Despite advice to share the funds with other miners, the money is now in the hands of its true owner.
