BRICS: Between aspirations for expansion and risks of division

The BRICS are gaining in power and their influence is growing. The coalition continues on its merry way and arouses the envy of many nations. However, some disagreements could shake the dynamics of the group in the coming weeks.

Expansion: the subject that could divide the group

Indonesia, Sudan, Argentina, Mexico, the list of countries wishing to join the BRICS coalition is long. Recently, France has also shown interest in the BRICS. President Emmanuel Macron has also asked to be invited to the next coalition summit. For the French president, there is obviously no question of remaining an observer of the rise of the group. The fifteenth BRICS summit is scheduled for August 22-24 in Johannesburg.

Among the many topics that representatives of these emerging powers will address is the question of the expansion of the group. While some member countries are in favor of the idea of expansion, Russia’s silence on the issue is puzzling. The country has still not shown its support or its opposition to the idea of seeing the group expand.

“This is a very important topic as we see more and more countries making statements about their intention to join BRICS. In general, such interest in the BRICS group shows the great potential of the association, its growing authority and, above all, the practical importance of this association. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov recently said, without giving further details. Some Sources also mention possible disagreements between the members of the coalition. The consensus that should allow other nations to join the group is far from being reached.

Vladimir Putin’s legal setbacks don’t help matters

Targeted by an international arrest warrant from the ICC, Vladimir Putin will not be able to go to the next BRICS summit. Some analysts believe that the absence of the Russian president, added to the existing disagreements over the accession of new members, could lead to a division of the group.

All eyes are therefore now on the BRICS, but particularly on Russia. The relations of Vladimir Putin’s country with the other members of the group and the candidates for membership could provide information on the outcome of this dossier.

The BRICS, which announced the launch of their single currency, were however well on their way to leading a financial revolution and shaking up the world economic order. They must therefore quickly regain their cohesion if they still wish to compete with the major groups in the world.
