Since Elon Musk acquired Twitter, renamed X, the billionaire has made efficiency a mantra, even if it means disrupting the company's traditional structures. His recent revelation of having reduced the workforce by 80% illustrates his atypical vision of management and leadership. So, if this decision is shocking in its scale, it also opens the debate on the viability of such a model.
A drastic purge in the workforce of X
As soon as he arrived at the head of Twitter, Elon Musk promised radical change. He confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that he had laid off 80% of employees. This announcement was made as part of an exchange where he responded to a humorous meme which evoked a reduction of “90% of the workforce”. Musk has specified with irony: “It’s more like 80%, but the purpose is the same”. A statement which sheds more light on the extent of the transformations orchestrated.
For Musk, this overhaul was necessary to make the company more agile and competitive. Through the rationalization of human resources, he believes he has simplified the company structure to better meet market needs. This choice, although extreme, is part of a strategy which aims to reposition X as a platform resolutely focused on the future.
A libertarian model that goes beyond
Beyond the walls of his company, Musk appears to apply his libertarian beliefs on a broader scale. Appointed a few days ago as an “adviser on government efficiency”, he aims to drastically reduce American public spending. With a targeted economy of 2,000 billion dollars, he plans in particular to limit the funds allocated to organizations that he considers ineffective or too progressive.
This approach illustrates a radical vision of management, where the allocation of resources favors efficiency to the detriment of traditional structures. For its detractors, this approach could weaken institutions and put thousands of jobs at risk. On the other hand, its supporters see it as an opportunity to modernize systems often considered obsolete and expensive.
By questioning established models, Elon Musk continues to divide. Decisions made at X and within its new government responsibilities could well redefine standards for management and efficiency. However, they also raise the question of the limits that must not be crossed to preserve social and economic balance. As the results of these choices begin to be felt, the question remains: can this model, both bold and controversial, prosper over time without compromising the very foundations on which the organizations it aims to transform rest? ?
