Symbiogenesis, Square Enix’s Ethereum NFT-Based Web3 Game
On Thursday, video game publisher Square Enix unveiled its first video game. Based on Ethereum NFT, the game is new for the Japanese firm. Indeed, it is not a spin-off of an existing IP, but a whole new franchise. The company has developed and published many well-known video game franchises. Among others, Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy.
However, Square Enix has now decided to strike out on its own and launch its own franchise, Symbiogenesis. In the words of the team, this game represents a collectible digital art experience. To do this, the latter will be anchored on NFT illustrations which will offer many possibilities to users. These non-fungible tokens, in addition to functioning in-game, can also serve as social media profile photos.
However, Symbiogenesis is not just one game among many others. According to an official announcement, this Ethereum NFT game is more of a web platform with interactive and story-based elements. Because of this, players will have full control over their NFTs while they have to complete missions.
This isn’t the first time Square Enix has taken an interest in NFTs and Web3. Its craze started in 2019 with an unexpected statement from President Yosuke Matsuda. Later in 2020, the company invested $2 million in the metaverse game The Sandbox. However, the firm only truly entered the Web3 space in 2021 with the launch of digital stickers.
Since 2019, Square Enix’s interest in the Web3 space and NFT-powered games has been steadily growing. Although it only really got into it last year, the Japanese firm is thinking big and its first Symbiogenesis game proves it. However, it will not be available until 2023.
