TikTok banned: between national security and political coup

Since Saturday, TikTok has disappeared from Apple and Google digital stores in the United States. A law passed in 2024 demanded that ByteDance, the Chinese parent company, sell the application under penalty of ban.

Despite a last resort, the Supreme Court decided : the ban is legitimate for protect Americans' data.

The reasons? Prevent Beijing from accessing sensitive information or manipulating public opinion. A decision applauded by some elected officials, but strongly criticized by others, like Erica, quoting Senator Rand Paul:

The TikTok ban is an attack on the First Amendment. The majority of apps collect data, so why target TikTok? »

However, all is not doom and gloom for TikTokers. Faced with this blackout, YouTube has become their refuge.

Between messages of support and new subscribers, the digital migration is well underway:

  • Perez Hilton, star of the platform, welcomed his 470,000 subscribers to YouTube;
  • Other creators have expressed sadness at the suspension;
  • Some see this situation as temporary, hoping for a quick return.

THE 170 million American TikTok users remain suspended at the end of this political-economic standoff.

Donald Trump, savior or gravedigger of TikTok?

On Monday, Donald Trump promised to study the situation and would consider a 90 day postponement. This deadline, however, depends on ByteDance’s willingness to sell its “jewel”. For the moment, the company refuses to sell, despite pressure.

Trump, who had already tried to ban TikTok during his first term, is far from unanimous. Elon Musk, for example, strongly opposes it:

Banning TikTok goes against freedom of expression. This is not what America stands for. »

A position which echoes the idea that such a ban could benefit X, its own platform, but to the detriment of fundamental American values.

The debate divides: is it a question of national security or a simple political lever? According to some critics, this ban aims to muzzling a “woke” generation through TikToksensitive to controversial themes such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Has the social network become too influential for younger generations?
