The CLARITY Act has just lost a strong opponent, the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA). The latter, who for months has been blocking the text on crypto regulation, has now thrown in the towel… this, ten days before the crucial vote in the Senate. And meanwhile, another little bombshell is circulating that could send the market and bitcoin plunging.

In brief
- The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) goes from opponent to neutral on the CLARITY Act, ten days before the closing vote on September 15.
- Section 604 and the $1.4 billion in crypto revenue linked to the Trump family remain major sticking points.
- Alice Liu (CoinMarketCap) warns of a possible “sell the news” scenario after the vote, while aiming for bitcoin at $500,000 by 2030.
The sheriff surrenders, the CLARITY Act catches its breath
After months of bombing the US Senate, the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) is finally bending its knees. Although she still doesn’t support the CLARITY Act, she still stops putting obstacles in its way, and that’s not bad. Neutrality rather than frontal opposition which could change everything just ten days before the closing vote scheduled for September 15, 2026. This vote which requires 60 votes, the Republicans, on their own, already have 53.
They therefore had to convince at least seven recalcitrant Democrats, including Catherine Cortez Masto, who relied precisely on these letters of opposition from the sheriffs to justify her vote against. This turnaround, or even this neutrality, is therefore losing a good part of its force today. But all is not yet won because there remains Section 604, which protects crypto software developers. These can be treated like fund managers, which is a boon for innovation advocates. But, a nightmare for those tracking money laundering.
What if the real danger came from the crypto market itself?
While Washington negotiates with the Sheriffsthe crypto market is already worried about a completely different scenario. Once voted on if the CLARITY Act becomes a classic event “sell the news” ?, asks Alice Liu, head of research at CoinMarketCap. For her, the crypto market has already integrated the news into prices. So the day the text actually passes, there will be nothing left to buy, everyone will sell, and the long-awaited regulatory clarity will be transformed into a pretext for profit-taking.
A mechanism already seen and reviewed in the crypto ecosystem, certainly, but which today takes on a particular flavor given the scale of the file. Alice Liu predicts, among other things, that bitcoin will climb to $500,000 by 2030. She is, however, much cooler on AI tokens, which she judges to be driven more by narrative speculation than by real utility.
The CLARITY Act therefore overcomes a significant obstacle which is the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA). But winning in the Senate doesn’t guarantee anything on the charts. Between closing the vote and threat “sell the news”the real battle certainly begins after September 15.
