Ethereum deploys Shanghai-Capella on the Sepolia testnet

Ethereum developers are targeting a March 14 date for the Shanghai upgrade on Goerli’s Testnet. This will be Shapella’s final dress rehearsal for the upcoming Ethereum hard fork. What exactly is this latest implementation? And why is it the most important? Let’s find out.

Goerli: the largest public testnet

Ethereum developers set the target date this Thursday during their bi-weekly call. They are thus targeting March 14 for the Goerli testnet to perform the Shanghai upgrade. This is a highly anticipated operation that will remove ether (ETH) from the blockchain. The Shanghai upgrade is alternatively called Shapella. This event will thus be Shapella’s last dress rehearsal for the next Ethereum hard fork.

As Ethereum’s largest public testnet, the test on Goerli will be heavily watched. By the way, this is also the last chance for staking providers to make sure of something important. It requires that the staked ETH can be withdrawn before Shanghai reaches the mainnet. Goerli is the network with the most validators to its credit.

It remains to fix the date of the mainnet

After the Goerli test, Ethereum developers will need to set the mainnet date. Earlier this week, the Sepolia testnet went through Shapella. Sepolia is the second testnet on Ethereum that has successfully rolled out the Shanghai update. Everything went well, Ethereum developers told CoinDesk.

During Thursday’s meeting, the core developers showed general consensus. They agree that the main Ethereum blockchain would receive a Shapella upgrade three to four weeks after Goerli. This means that staked ETH withdrawals could happen in April. There will thus be a slight delay compared to the initial schedule that the developers had set for March.
