Global geopolitical balance is changing. Russia, which was a member of the G8 for a time before its exclusion in 2014, today adopts a radically different posture. Faced with what she considers a decline in influence of Western powers, Moscow now favors the BRICS and the G20, to the detriment of a G7 deemed obsolete. This strategic reconfiguration goes beyond a simple diplomatic adjustment, it illustrates a broader change in power dynamics, where emerging economies gain ground in the face of institutions dominated by the West. Through the statements of its ambassador to Canada, Russia confirms its final disengagement from the G7 and traces the contours of a new international order.
An assumed rejection of the G7 and a new strategic CAP
“Russia has no interest in returning to the G7. This format is exceeded and no longer reflects the realities of the current world order, “said Oleg Stepanov, Russian ambassador to Canada. According to him, this group, which historically brought together the great Western economic powers, no longer has the capacity to effectively influence global affairs. The expulsion of Russia in 2014, after the annexation of Crimea, marked the end of the integration of Moscow in this limited club. Since then, Russia has gradually moved away from the structures led by the West and has not sought to negotiate a return to the G7.
According to Stepanov, global governance mechanisms must adapt to a new multipolar reality. He highlights the BRICS, the Shanghai cooperation Organization (SCO) and the G20 as alternatives more representative of contemporary economic and political balances. “We have chosen real global governance platforms,” he added. In addition, he underlines that Russia seeks to rely on alliances where emerging economies have a central role, contrary to what it perceives as Western domination within the G7.
The BRICS and the G20, new priorities of Russia
If Russia relies on the BRICS and the G20, it is above all to strengthen its presence in organizations where the West does not dictate the rules. The BRICS have gained momentum in recent years and aims to create a counterweight to Western institutions. Thanks to the integration of new members and the development of alternatives to the dollar -based monetary system, this coalition becomes an essential player on the international scene.
The G20, meanwhile, constitutes a more balanced space for dialogue where established economic powers and developing countries mix. For Moscow, this set is a strategic lever which allows us to weigh on global economic discussions without being forced by Western geopolitical blockages. This strategic realignment could also promote the development of alternative currencies and transactions in cryptos, which would thus bypass economic sanctions and the control of the traditional financial system.
Such a refocusing from Russia to blocks like the BRICS and the G20 illustrates a progressive shift to a multipolar world. Through its distance from the G7, Moscow seeks to reduce its exposure to Western influence, but also to redefine the standards of international cooperation. This choice could accelerate economic changes to governance less centered on the dollar and open the door to a broader adoption of decentralized financial solutions. The fragmentation of the world economic order is underway, and Russia seems determined to be one of the main architects.
