Oxford student jailed for stealing $2.6 million in crypto

A Dutch-born Oxford student known as Wybo Wiersma will serve a 54-month prison sentence. The latter is accused of having stolen more than 2.6 billion dollars using a crypto scam. Find out what really happened.

The course of the crypto scam

This crook started his crypto fraud when he was studying at the Internet Institute at St Cross College. This will create a website with a fake name and the latter will generate “seeds”. These are indeed passwords that users believed had not been compromised. These were necessary for the use of the MIOTA. It is a cryptocurrency with a market capitalization of $620 million at present.

However, malicious code will be attached to these “seeds”, helping Wiersma gain access to customer assets. He will therefore begin to steal funds to send them to his accounts. Next, the thief will convert the stolen MIOTA stash into Monero (XMR) using Bitfinex. This all takes place in January 2018, but he won’t profit from his scam for long.

Interception of his suspicious activities

Bitfinex will eventually spot its scams and freeze its accounts by asking for proof of identity. The thief will provide fake passports, namely one from an Australian known as ‘Jason’ and the other from a Belgian resident. The platform will not authorize these documents at all. This is how the Dutch will use the services of Binance.

Unfortunately for the Oxford student, the world’s leading crypto exchange will quickly detect his plans. Thus, access to his accounts will simply be suspended. In addition, it should be noted that several concerned investors reported their missing assets to the German police in 2018.

This is how an investigation will be launched in collaboration with british police. She takes them to Wiersma’s home in Oxford. A muscular descent will make it possible to trace all its activities over the past few years. Judge Michael Gledhill KC gives him 4 and a half years in prison.
