NFT: UNICEF uses tokens to raise funds

Around the world, nearly 3 billion people do not have access to the internet. More than the majority of them live in developing countries. According to UNICEF, children are those who suffer the most from this situation because it slows down their learning. To address the problem, the UN agency formed in 2019, the Giga joint venture with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). The solution is to deploy the Internet in schools in these disadvantaged regions. What about the financing of the initiative? The partners want to take advantage of the popularity of NFTs to mobilize the necessary resources.

NFTs to finance the deployment of the Internet in schools

During the Blockchain Expo event which took place from September 20 to 21 in Amsterdam, Giga presented its Project Connect initiative. It consists of raising funds to connect schools to the internet in developing countries around the world. More than 1.1 million schools identified in 49 countries will benefit from the project. Giga has partnered with Dutch artist Nadieh Bremer to launch a collection of 1,000 NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain. baptized Patchwork KingdomNFT’s collection is based on data collected by Giga and shows people and areas with and without an internet connection.

Last March, a public sale raised 240 Ether (ETH), or $700,000. The sum has already been allocated to the realization of the project.

For Gerben Kijne, blockchain product manager at Giga, NFTs can revolutionize donations. In effect, the donor can track the impact of their donations through the ownership of the NFT of a specific school. He can also monitor whether the funds collected are collected to pay for Internet connectivity at this school.

“I think NFTs offer a really interesting use case for donations. One of the things we’re starting to look at is what philanthropy will look like for the next generation of people. Because if you go to UNICEF today and donate, I don’t know what you’ll get, probably a thank you email (…) But with NFTs it’s different. You can know exactly if your donation was used to solve a problem »he explained.

Apart from allowing young school children to have access to the internet, Project Connect lays the foundations for innovation. People who donate through the purchase of NFTs can find out whether or not the donation has really impacted and solved the initial problem. This is not the first time that UNICEF has used NFTs. In December 2021, the agency launched tokens in honor of the 75e UN anniversary.
