A Bitcoin wallet estimated at $1.5 million appears in the investigation into the murder of Mexican musician Jonathan Meléndez, his wife, their 3-year-old daughter and a domestic worker. Two suspects were arrested less than twelve hours after the incident. The exact link with BTC, however, remains to be established: Mexican authorities confirm a request for money and a commercial dispute, but not yet the amount of $1.5 million.

In brief
- Four people were killed on September 1 in Atizapán de Zaragoza, near Mexico City.
- Local media report a hardware wallet containing $1.5 million in bitcoin.
- The authorities confirm a request for money, but have not officially validated this amount or the exact role of the wallet.
Bitcoin: two suspects arrested less than twelve hours after the facts
Jonathan Meléndez, 38, was keyboardist for the Mexican group Camilo Séptimo. On September 1, he was found dead in his apartment with his pregnant wife, their 3-year-old daughter and a 21-year-old domestic worker. The family dog was also killed. A 6-year-old boy present at the scene survived. The case comes as physical attacks linked to cryptos have already caused more than $30 million in losses in 2026.
Two men, identified as Diego Sebastián “N” and Gerardo “N”, were arrested. Mexican Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch said the main suspect had a business relationship with Meléndez. He also confirmed that a sum of money had been demanded before the quadruple murder.
Authorities have not yet made all the details public. Harfuch explained that the prosecution wanted to preserve certain information before the first hearing. This is precisely where bitcoin comes into the picture.
The $1.5 million wallet is not yet officially confirmed
Bitcoin.com, relying on local media with access to the investigation, reports that Jonathan Meléndez had approximately $1.5 million in bitcoin on a hardware wallet. The suspects allegedly knew of these assets and entered the home to retrieve the device.
A second element appears in this information: Gerardo “N” was allegedly promised nearly $120,000 to participate in the operation. One of the suspects knew the victim well enough to gain access to the home without immediately arousing suspicion.
But the file still requires caution. Asked publicly about the sum claimed, Omar García Harfuch replied that he did not know the amount. He confirmed a financial demand and threats, without mentioning Bitcoin or a wallet of 1.5 million dollars. The Mexican presidency also evokes a financial dispute and a commercial relationship between the protagonists.
The crypto amount must therefore be considered, at this stage, as information resulting from the investigation reported by the local press, and not as an officially established fact. This distinction matters. Cases of this type are often quickly classified as “wrench attacks”, these attacks where physical violence replaces computer hacking. Tremplin.io had already noted a 75% increase in these attacks between 2024 and 2025.
Physical attacks become a real risk for Bitcoin holders
The Mexican case comes in an already very busy year. Chainalysis recorded 46 violent incidents linked to cryptocurrencies until the end of June 2026, compared to 40 over the same period in 2025. More than 30 million dollars were actually stolen. Home burglaries now represent 37% of recorded incidents, compared to 26% in 2023.
The most interesting figure is elsewhere: only 12 attacks out of 46 resulted in a payment or transfer of funds. The success rate has therefore fallen to 26%, compared to 49% in 2025. Violence is increasing despite lower efficiency. A hardware wallet protects private keys against many digital attacks. It obviously does not protect its owner against someone who knows their identity, assets and address.
France already knows this problem well. In January, a woman was kidnapped in Manosque to access cryptos supposedly owned by her partner. In Mexico, the investigation will now have to determine whether the $1.5 million in bitcoin was actually the main motive for the quadruple murder or whether it represents just one element of a broader financial dispute. For now, the request for money is confirmed. The amount in BTC is not yet officially known.
