Japanese investment company Metaplanet has just reached a major milestone by making its largest investment to date: the acquisition of 620 Bitcoins, valued at nearly $60 million.
Metaplanet acquires 620 Bitcoins
On December 23, Metaplanet made its largest bitcoin purchase to date, acquiring precisely 619.7 BTC at a unit price of approximately $96,000. This major transaction is almost quadruple its previous record from October, when the company purchased 159.7 BTC.
This strategic acquisition brings Metaplanet's total portfolio to 1,762 BTC, valued at approximately $168 million. With an average purchase price of $75,600 per bitcoin, the company asserts its position as the twelfth largest institutional holder of bitcoin, just behind Semler Scientific.
The results speak for themselves: between October and December, Metaplanet recorded an impressive 310% return on its bitcoin investments, far surpassing the 41.7% obtained in the previous quarter.
A historic transaction that strengthens Metaplanet’s position
Nicknamed the “MicroStrategy of Asia”, Metaplanet does not intend to stop there. The company plans to establish a formal division dedicated to “bitcoin accumulation and management,” expanding its approach beyond just directly purchasing cryptos.
To finance its ambitions, the company announced at the end of November a share acquisition program aimed at raising more than $62 million. These funds will mainly be intended to strengthen its position in bitcoin.
This bold strategy is already bearing fruit on the stock market. Despite a recent decline of 13% over the week, Metaplanet stock has seen spectacular growth of more than 2,100% since the start of the year, reaching an all-time high of 4,080 yen ($26) on December 17.
In sum, Metaplanet's record acquisition of 620 bitcoins highlights not only its commitment to crypto, but also its ability to turn market dips into strategic opportunities. Like large companies like MicroStrategy, Metaplanet demonstrates that Bitcoin can become a key growth engine for institutions.
