Meta's artificial intelligence is finally available in Europe after a long showdown with regulators. Meta Ai, already integrated into group applications in the United States, is gradually arriving in France and in 40 other European countries. He is now inviting himself to WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, in depth modifying the interaction of users with the platforms of the Mark Zuckerberg group.
An expected launch after months of blocking
Meta's conversational AI was born in the United States in September 2023 before being extended in April 2024 to all applications in the group. However, his arrival in Europe was delayed due to the regulatory requirements of the European Union. Meta criticized a legislative framework deemed too complex and incoherent, in particular in terms of data protection (GDPR) and regulation on the digital markets.
After several negotiations, the company finally managed to adapt Meta AI to European requirements, in particular by guaranteeing that it would not be trained on the data of European users.
How does Meta AI work on Meta applications?
Meta AI works integrated into the group's applications, facilitating access to its features:
- On WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and Facebook, a blue icon makes it possible to invoke the assistant in a private conversation or a group;
- On WhatsApp, it is also possible to interact with Meta Ai by typing @Metaai followed by his request;
- The assistant can answer questions, offer suggestions or deepen news topics based on online search engines;
- It should also generate images soon, but this feature is not yet available in Europe.
Unlike the first versions envisaged, Meta AI does not include celebrity avatars like Kendall Jenner or Snoop Dogg, a project ultimately abandoned in 2024.
An AI assistant that aims at the billion users
Currently, Meta AI claims 700 million monthly users and aims to cross the billion by the end of 2025. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Meta, is convinced that his AI could dominate the market for smart assistants against Chatgpt (Openai), Gemini (Google) and Claude (Anthropic).
To achieve this, Meta invests massively: between 60 and $ 65 billion in 2025 in its infrastructure, including data centers and servers dedicated to AI.
What challenges for Meta in Europe?
The arrival of Meta Ai in Europe Mark a victory for Meta, who positions himself as an unmissable actor in artificial consumer intelligence. The challenge is to win the daily life of users, providing them with an assistant capable of instantly meeting their needs, without leaving their favorite applications.
