According to Antoine Riard, a prominent blockchain security expert, Lightning Network developers are culpably negligent in the face of serious flaws. Seduced by profits, they would be willing to sacrifice the security of Bitcoin. A difficult dilemma that threatens the network.
Lightning developers accused of neglecting security for the benefit of investors
Antoine Riard, a former Bitcoin lead developer and security researcher, slammed the door on the Lightning Network in October, severely alarmed by the existence of major breaches in the network’s defenses.
He points to a new class of attacks called “replacement cycles,” which could allow hackers to steal funds by exploiting vulnerabilities in payment channels. Although some Bitcoin developers downplay the ease of such attacks, Riard bluntly asserts that they put Lightning in an “extremely perilous position.”
Riard urges Lightning developers to work closely with the broader Bitcoin community to design sustainable solutions. But he fears that short-term profit will supplant technical imperatives among key players.
Now committed to the development of native Bitcoin to solve these problems, Riard urges Lightning developers to join this concerted effort:

Distorted incentives
Riard argues that many Lightning companies are funded by venture capital funds, which distorts their motivations.
Rather than prioritizing robustness and long-term security, they would aim to quickly generate income for their backers. Even if it means serving end users and reproducing the “ tragedy of the commons » described by Garrett J. Hardin – when actors driven by self-interest exhaust shared resources.
“ The sad reality is that most of them work for venture-backed entities or commercial entities with the same deadline preference, to the long-term detriment of end users.“
This frantic quest for profits would also harm decentralization and therefore the long-term resilience of Lightning. Centralized systems, no matter how efficient, present increased risks of single failure and censorship, contrary to the promises of Bitcoin.
Towards greater centralization of the Lightning?
Riard fears that Lightning will drift towards an increasingly centralized future, the opposite of Bitcoin’s original decentralizing philosophy.
This is also why he preferred to cut ties with the Lightning ecosystem, now refusing any association with the security of a network which currently holds the equivalent of 5,300 BTC.
Although Lightning has not suffered as many attacks exploiting its security flaws as some DeFi protocols, the risk exists. And if Lightning developers fail to prioritize security and decentralization over profit, the future of the network could be in jeopardy.
Antoine Riard’s scathing accusations highlight the fundamental dilemma facing Lightning Network. The race for profits risks undermining the decentralized and secure foundations on which the promise of the network rests. Unless there is a surge, the adoption of Lightning risks suffering.
