Hackers will celebrate Halloween with a bang

This month of October will have been fruitful for hackers, a bit like an apotheosis after a very difficult year for investors. Chainalysis announces that 2022 is likely to be worse than 2021, even a record year for hackers.

Bloody October for investors

Already this summer, we were wondering when the bankruptcies, hacks and other exit scams would end. Well, it was here to stay, since according to the data of Chainalysis, 3 billion dollars have flown away during the first 10 months of the year in the wallets of hackers who will undoubtedly have something to celebrate Halloween. The gluttony of thieves does not stop and the month of October is a disaster: the first two weeks, DeFi had already experienced 11 hacks and 718 million dollars evaporated.

DeFi targeted, bridges under threat

In 2019, most hacks targeted centralized exchanges which have strengthened security (we also see a lot of tutorials for users with recommendations to secure their account). From now on, the bridges which make it possible to swap, that is to say to pass from one blockchain to another, are in the sights of pirates. Especially since users increasingly constrained by reinforced KYC sometimes turn to these solutions.

As seen in the graph above, DeFi is a major target for hackers: in just 15 days, in October, 3 bridges were hacked, even the BNB Chain could not escape it. It is assumed from the graphs that the hodlers kept their recovery phrase without exposing themselves, i.e. keeping their cryptos cold.

We see it in the graphs presented by Chainalysis, the exchanges have taken drastic measures for the security of their users. The hackers have changed their target. Repeated hacks are a real scourge for investors, but almost a godsend for regulatory authorities who are impatient to regulate the cryptosphere, or even to ban everything.
