Google Introduces New Rules for Cryptos and NFT Games Advertising

A revolution is underway at Google for September 2023: the rules surrounding cryptos and NFTs will be updated for more transparent advertising. Here are the new guidelines for advertisers offering NFT games!

New rules relating to cryptos and associated products

Google said it will update rules relating to cryptos and related products. This update aims to clarify the scope and requirements for advertising NFT games.

Starting September 15, 2023, new rules will be in effect for advertisers offering NFT games that do not promote gambling-related content. According to the announcement, they will be able to advertise these products subject to certain requirements.

Google stated different examples of blockchain-based game promotion involving NFTs. We can cite NFT games which allow players to purchase in-game items. These can be virtual clothing for a player’s characters or even weapons or armor. Players use these items in the game to improve their experience or advance the game.

Clarify the rules for games based on Non-Fungible Token

When it comes to NFT games, Google spells out what is not allowed. Among these restrictions is the promotion of games where players can bet or stake on NFTs. Thus, Google prohibits the promotion of a game which, for example, allows players to stake NFTs in exchange for crypto tokens. In exchange, they have the opportunity to earn an item of real value, including other NFTs.

Then, the new rules also do not authorize the promotion of social casino games that reward NFTs. For example, simulated casino games (poker, roulette, slot machine) which offer the possibility of winning NFTs.

Google expects advertisers to comply with local laws in the areas where the ads are advertised. In short, these new rules apply to all accounts promoting these products. Non-compliance therefore results in a warning of at least 7 days before any account suspension.
