Ethereum revolutionizes NFTs with ERC-404!

A completely new Ethereum standard called ERC-404 is currently under development. Led by the creators “ctrl” and “Acme”, this ambitious project aims to merge fungible ERC-20 type tokens with ERC-721 NFTs, which are usually not compatible. Behind this revolutionary idea lies the possibility of fractional ownership of NFTs, a concept with profound implications.

The concept of a hybrid ERC-404 token

The purpose of the ERC-404 standard is to combine the ERC-20 standards, which define tradable fungible tokens like USDT, and ERC-721, used for unique NFTs. This ambitious merger would result in a hybrid token bringing together the best of both worlds.

Concretely, ERC-404 tokens would allow several wallets to own fractions of the same iconic NFT. We could thus hold shares in a Bored Ape Yacht Club or an extremely rare digital work. These fractional shares would then be exchangeable or usable, like any ERC-20 token.

This disintermediated innovation is the property of NFTs and would open up new use cases. For example, lenders could accept fractions of NFTs as collateral, instead of having to seize the entire NFT. The technical issues are nevertheless complex for a successful integration of the two standards.

Ethereum, adoption and criticism sparked by ERC-404

Although its development is still experimental, the ERC-404 standard is already generating a lot of interest in the crypto ecosystem. Giants like Binance and OKX quickly announced their support for the standard, before retracting.

The Pandora token, the first to adopt ERC-404, has seen explosive growth in its valuation. Other projects using ERC-404 have also emerged, showing the potential of this concept.

However, ERC-404 also raises criticism within the crypto community. Some developers like “quit” have warned of security vulnerabilities, such as the possibility of split NFTs being stolen from poorly configured lending platforms.

The creators of the standard have tempered these risks, instead blaming the problems on improper integration of ERC-404. In any case, the greatest caution remains necessary regarding the safety of this experimental technology. Its adoption will require extensive audits and verifications before being considered safe. With their ERC-404 standard, Ethereum developers are pushing the boundaries of blockchain innovation, by merging two previously incompatible standards.

Despite the technical challenges and controversies, this promising concept of fractional NFTs is already generating a lot of enthusiasm. If properly audited and secured, Ethereum’s ERC-404 could become a game-changer for the future of cryptocurrencies and digital property. The next stages of this experimental project promise to be decisive.
