In a particularly tumultuous crypto context, we have recently seen a rush of Ethereum whales. A trend which, according to recent information, is not as general as one might think.
In short
• Ethereum whales are reducing their acquisitions, suggesting pessimism.
• A Santiment study notes a fall in ETH investments since April 2023.
Fading enthusiasm among Ethereum whales
Not too long ago, there was some data indicating some investor attraction to Ethereum’s ether (ETH). They acquired some 94 million ETH thanks to increased interest in crypto from institutional investors.
This dynamic could suggest a certain sustained attractiveness for ETH despite the generally bleak crypto context. Upon analysis, this is not entirely true. At least that’s what suggests a recent study from crypto data provider Santiment.
The firm noticed a drop in ETH acquisitions for wallets hosting between 10 and 10,000 ETH. An observation therefore linked to the large holders of this crypto, namely whales and sharks, to a certain extent.
Since April, these investors have reportedly limited their investments in the second most important crypto on the market after bitcoin. Worse, many of them have sold, if not sold off, their assets over the last four months.
This trend is a change in the attitude of whales regarding their positioning on ETH. Santiment notes that until April 2023, investors had been particularly optimistic about ETH.
This was felt in Ethereum transaction and exchange volumes. Data which according to experts is important in analyzing the price dynamics of ETH over a certain period.
Interestingly, Santiment explains, Ethereum trading and trading volumes have declined significantly in recent months. Especially since November of the previous year.
Ethereum unattractive in the end?
On the basis of these analyses, should we conclude that there has been a sustained decline in interest around ETH? Brian Quinlivan, marketing director of Santiment, is a little reserved on the answer to this question.
He believes it is necessary to constantly monitor developments in the crypto market to determine the potential implications of investor attitudes. This is, according to Santiment, crucial to understanding the effect that this development may have on the price of ETH.
Given the hyper-changing context of the crypto market, Brian Quinlivan’s opinion is not lacking in relevance. While Grayscale won its case against the SEC, a whale has just offered itself 10,000 ETH on Uniswap. This is against around 17 million USDC. Enough to reignite investors’ flame for ether?
