The crypto and financial industries are hoping that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) rules in favor of a spot Ethereum ETF. But some experts say their hopes could be dashed, as the chances of such a prospect becoming a reality appear to be dwindling. Here's why they are so pessimistic.
Ambiguity of Ethereum's Crypto Status as a Key Obstacle
While spot Bitcoin ETFs are seeing some popularity, expectations around the approval of a spot Ethereum ETF are hitting a grim reality. The prospects for an Ethereum Spot ETF appear to be dimming.
At the Paris Blockchain Week conference, Jan van Eck, CEO of asset manager VanEck, shared his pessimism about this possibility. He talks about the uncertainty surrounding the request submitted by the company he manages. But that is not the main reason for his doubts.
The Van Eck boss believes that unlike bitcoin (BTC), widely considered a decentralized commodity, the regulatory classification of ether (ETH) remains ambiguous. It is this lack of clarity that is complicating the approval process for the long-awaited Ethereum ETF.
From then on, he no longer rules out the possibility that the SEC will reject his company's Ethereum ETF application outright. Also, an asset manager like Cathy Wood's Ark Invest, whose application should be examined in May, could also meet the same fate.
Little enthusiasm now for an Ethereum ETF
Jan van Eck's opinion is only the echo of an opinion which is spreading more and more among players in the crypto and financial industry. Indeed, the latter is not the only one to express doubts regarding the approval of a spot Ethereum ETF.
Jean-Marie Mognetti, CEO of CoinShares, agrees. The official expressed skepticism about getting the green light from the SEC unlike what happened for bitcoin in January. However, he does not immediately rule out this possibility.
He hinted that approval might not materialize before the end of the year. Although he acknowledges concerns about Ethereum's consensus model, which relies on stakers rather than miners.
In short, the excitement around the emergence of a spot Ethereum ETF has given way to doubt among players in a context of regulatory obstacles. Knowing that the path to approval of this instrument could prove arduous and prolonged, investors and crypto players must be patient while awaiting clarification from regulators.
