On this International Women’s Day, it is important to question the progress made in gender equality and to highlight areas where disparities persist. In this sense, the relationship with money and finance remains a crucial subject. The IFOP 2024 barometer reveals significant differences between women and men in their approach to financial management.
Finance: Women are less inclined to invest
When it comes to finance and investing, women are more cautious than men. They favor long-term savings and are more sensitive to risk.
Several factors can explain this phenomenon:
Risk aversion
According to the IFOP study93% of women adhere to the idea of do not associate money with risk (compared to 85% of men). This aversion can be explained by psychological and social factors (social pressure, fear of failure, etc.)
Lack of knowledge
Second factor: lack of financial knowledge. Women often have less access to financial information than men.
Less fluid careers and lower salaries
Women feel less comfortable than men in negotiating a raise (37% vs. 54%) or start their own business (18% vs. 31%). It may :
- limit their financial resources,
- discourage them from taking risks when investing.
Women and financial management within a couple
Inequalities also manifest themselves in the management of finances within the couple. According to the IFOP survey, women earn less and manage current expenses.
- 74% of men say they have the highest income in the household, compared to 33% of women.
- 52% of women manage current expenses, compared to 30% of men.
That’s not all ! It is mainly men who take care of financial investments : 42%, compared to 29% of women.
Women’s relationship with money and finance is still unequal in 2024. Progress is necessary to encourage women to invest.
