Elon Musk summoned to Paris: deepfakes, AI and illicit images at the heart of the case
Opened in January 2025 by the national cyber unit of the gendarmerie, the investigation targets three major offenses :
- First: complicity in the dissemination of child pornography images
- Second: the creation of sexual deepfakes via Grok, the generative artificial intelligence integrated into X (ultra-realistic montages produced without the consent of the victims)
- Third: fraudulent data extraction on a large scale.
The Paris prosecutor, Laure Beccuau, had nevertheless displayed a desire for appeasement. She described a “constructive” approach aimed at guarantee compliance of the X platform with French laws. Elon Musk, however, did not respond to this outstretched hand. His summons for a free and non-binding hearing went unanswered.
Good to know: the former CEO of X, Linda Yaccarino, is also targeted by the procedure as “legal manager” of the platform at the material time.
Elon Musk facing France: a France-United States diplomatic crisis
The matter goes beyond a simple legal dispute. According to the Wall Street Journalthe American Department of Justice (DOJ) would have refused any legal assistance to France. In fact, he believes that Paris investigation violates US First Amendment on freedom of expression. In response, the Paris prosecutor's office said it had no knowledge of this letter. In any case, diplomatic pressure is real.
For his part, Elon Musk speaks of a political attack. On his network, he validates Washington's position with a lapidary:

Elon Musk absent: what consequences for DOGE and cryptos?
Each controversy directly involving Elon Musk generally generates volatility on its associated assets. Dogecoin (DOGE) is the most documented example: the billionaire's negative media outings regularly lead to price corrections within 24-48 hours. Tesla and private markets linked to SpaceX are also facing similar pressures.
More structurally, a French conviction (even partial) could force X to review its model in Europe under the requirements of the DSA (Digital Services Act), particularly in terms of content moderation. A withdrawal or restriction of access to the platform on French territory would also weaken the valuation of the entire Elon Musk empire.
