In a recent interview, former President Donald Trump proposed a bold solution to solve the US’s $35 trillion national debt crisis: using Bitcoin. The proposal marks a notable shift in the Republican Party’s stance on digital assets.
Bitcoin to repay the American debt? Donald Trump's bold proposal
Trump suggested that the U.S. government could consider “giving out a small crypto check” to pay down the national debt. He pointed out that Bitcoin, as a limited-supply asset, could absorb and transform the inflation of the U.S. dollar into a new system based on sound money and blockchain technology. The idea is part of a broader strategy to preserve U.S. dominance in global markets and trade.
Trump's proposal comes at a time when the U.S. government continues to devalue the dollar. This is done by printing more money to repay previous debts. This practice has led to a rapid increase in the national debt, which is increasing by about $1 trillion every three months.
A well-received proposal!
The idea of using Bitcoin to pay off the national debt has been supported by other political figures. Notably, presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Senator Cynthia Lummis. The latter recently introduced a bill to establish a strategic reserve of Bitcoin in the United States to counter the harmful effects of excessive money printing and preserve the country’s financial dominance. The Wyoming senator has set a goal for the U.S. Treasury to acquire 5% of the total Bitcoin supply! And to hold this scarce decentralized asset for at least 20 years.
Donald Trump’s proposal to use Bitcoin to pay off the US national debt represents an innovative and controversial approach to solving the debt crisis. As the debate over the future of cryptocurrencies and their role in the global economy continues, Trump’s pro-crypto policy could well propel him to the top of the state in the upcoming elections.
