Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has just unveiled innovative proposals aimed at significantly reducing transaction confirmation times on the network. These innovations could transform the user experience and strengthen Ethereum's position in the crypto ecosystem.
Ethereum seeks speed to dominate crypto market
Although Ethereum has made notable advancements in recent years, the network still struggles to match the speed of newer blockchains.
With a block time of around 12 seconds, Ethereum still lags behind competitors like Solana, which can generate blocks in 0.4 seconds. This limitation is holding back Ethereum’s adoption for some applications that require minimal latency.
To meet this challenge, Buterin propose several technical innovations. The most ambitious is the “single-slot finality (SSF)” or “single-slot finality” in French, which would radically simplify the network architecture.
“The main challenge with SSF is that, naively, it seems to imply that every Ethereum participant would have to publish two messages every 12 seconds, which would be a significant load for the chain to handle. » Vitalik
This approach would allow us to free ourselves from the current system of eras and locations, which is considered too complex. However, its implementation raises questions about the load supported by the blockchain.
A delicate balance between speed and decentralization
Another promising avenue is “based pre-confirmations.” This mechanism would allow users to pay additional fees in exchange for a guarantee that their transaction will be included in the next block. Compatible with layer 2 solutions, it would provide a near-instantaneous experience for demanding applications.
While speed is crucial, Buterin stresses the importance of not compromising Ethereum’s fundamentals. Decentralization and security remain top priorities.
Ethereum's current block time is already a significant improvement over Bitcoin (10 minutes). However, Buterin estimates that some applications require latencies in the “hundreds of milliseconds or less.”
The challenge, then, is to find the right balance between performance and network integrity. Buterin's proposals aim to push the boundaries while preserving the very essence of Ethereum.
In short, Vitalik Buterin’s forward-thinking ideas could very well redefine the standards of the crypto industry. If they come to fruition, these innovations would allow Ethereum to consolidate its leadership position, while paving the way for new revolutionary applications in the blockchain universe.
