Polygon is already well known for its scalability solutions on Ethereum. The crypto platform now aims to become a regulated payments platform in the United States. This strategic evolution is confirmed by major acquisitions which allow it to offer services compliant with American financial regulations.

In brief
- Polygon seeks to become a regulated crypto payments infrastructure in the United States
- The platform wants to make stablecoin transfers and everyday payments simpler and compatible with American requirements.
A strategic turning point for Polygon: acquisitions and regulation
Polygon is no longer content to be a technical infrastructure for DeFi and NFT. It wants to become a legally recognized player for crypto payments in the United States. Its new strategy is based on two key moves. First, Polygon Labs acquired Coinme, an American company already regulated in the crypto payments space. Then, the purchase of Sequence, a specialist in blockchain payments infrastructures, completes this approach.
Through these acquisitions, Polygon obtains money transfer licenses in 48 states in the United States. This opens the door to KYC (know your customer) and AML (anti-money laundering) compliant financial services, as well as large-scale fiat-to-crypto conversion capabilities.
The CEO of Polygon Labs himself emphasized on. For him, these acquisitions provide “the missing pieces” to allow the platform to offer complete and regulated crypto payments.
This turning point is part of a logic of proactive compliance rather than confrontation with the authorities. In a market where regulatory pressure is strong, Polygon is banking on integration rather than avoidance.
Stablecoins and payments: a new priority
The evolution of Polygon is not only legal but it is also functional. One of the big opportunities identified by the company concerns stablecoins. Polygon aims to exploit the growth of stablecoin transactions. He wants to do this in particular in the context of cross-border payments and inter-professional settlements.
Stablecoins avoid the volatility typical of cryptos such as Bitcoin or Ethereum. They therefore constitute an ideal basis for regular payments, whether between businesses or between consumers. By integrating stablecoin payments into a regulated framework, Polygon seeks to attract traditional financial payment players.
This strategy aligns perfectly with Polygon's overall goal. Indeed, the platform wants to create an “Open Money Stack” infrastructure capable of moving value as easily as data.
The choice of the United States as the main platform for this deployment is not trivial. The country represents the largest financial market in the world, but also one of the most demanding in terms of crypto regulation. Having a solid regulatory presence in the territory strengthens Polygon's legitimacy. The framework is also becoming clearer around stablecoins since the adoption of the GENIUS Act in 2025, which regulates “payment stablecoins” and defines authorized issuers.
