Crypto lobbying in the USA: Companies spend millions to influence regulations

Every economic ecosystem has a circle of people pulling the strings in some way to influence decisions. This is the mission of lobbyists and there are many in the American crypto industry. Recent data shows a clear increase in funds injected by the latter to promote crypto activities.

The American crypto lobby spends massively

The U.S. crypto industry is poised to break its own federal lobbying spending record in 2023. Indeed, companies are allocating significant resources to navigate an ever-changing regulatory landscape.

According to the data According to OpenSecrets, a nonprofit research group, crypto firms have already spent $18.96 million on lobbying. This, during the first three quarters of this year which is coming to an end.

This amount has increased substantially year-on-year. This exceeds the $16.1 million spent on crypto lobbying during the same period in 2022. And it is thought that it could exceed the total of around $22 million spent the year before.

This sustained increase in lobbying investments tells us one thing. Let the crypto sector strive, strategically, to restore its image. The objective being to shape regulatory policy, which has been rather austere in recent months, in its favor.

Crypto lobbying gains momentum in the US with record spending

Coinbase exchange tops lobbying spending

This effort to strategically shape American crypto regulatory policy is primarily carried out by the Coinbase exchange platform. The firm injected a total of $2.16 million into lobbying.

Other companies, and not the least important, follow. Among them are the crypto exchange Binance and the Blockchain Association. Foris DAX and the operator of Crypto.com are also included in this circle.

We must understand that all these companies do not inject colossal funds into lobbying by chance. For example, Coinbase and Binance have been attacked by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) who believe they have violated securities laws. The intensification of crypto lobbying efforts appears to come as a response to legal attacks from the US financial regulator. The latter is also determined to govern an American crypto sector which, according to him, does not care about the laws and its requirements.
