Crypto ETF: Slowdown in outflows after a difficult week
Summarize this article with:

Crypto ETFs took on water for several days continuously. Many believed in a disaster announced on the digital markets. Outflows piled up and capital changed course abruptly. However, the storm now appears to be moving away from dangerous coasts. Lifebuoys emerge discreetly in this eventful crossing. They often come at the best time for the crews still on board.

Bitcoin teeters on the brink, while powerful investors hold it back, reassuring a still worried market.

In brief

  • Bitcoin ETF outflows slowed to $19 million on June 11.
  • BlackRock captured $30 million on its IBIT the same day.
  • Ethereum ETFs suffer their third consecutive day of withdrawals.
  • Eric Balchunas considers the recent outflows insignificant compared to the 100 billion in assets.

Bitcoin hoists the sails despite the swell

On June 11, bitcoin ETFs were still navigating very choppy waters. Net outflows reached $19.03 million this specific day. This session marks a fifth consecutive day of withdrawals from the market. Yet upon closer inspection, several ships unexpectedly changed direction.

BlackRock set sail with $30.26 million in entries on its IBIT. Grayscale added another $5.62 million to its coffers. Hashdex DEFI and Morgan Stanley MSBT also captured very significant positive flows. Opposite, ARKB, HODL, BITB and FBTC suffered massive departures.

Bitcoin ETF net assets remain firmly anchored at $79.5 billion. Daily volume exceeds $2 billion traded in a single day. BlackRock now acts as a powerful beacon in this journey that has become very unpredictable.

Crypto is swaying but some funds are resisting

Ethereum ETFs have experienced much stronger headwinds than their competitors. Net outflows reached $15.89 million in this session alone. It was already a third consecutive day in the deep red. Fidelity lost over $20 million on its FETH product. BlackRock tried to plug the breach with 8.63 million injected into ETHA.

Crypto investors seem to follow a very simple rule of thumb. When they come back on board after a storm, they first favor bitcoin. Ethereum today pays for this implicit hierarchy between the two assets. Yet HYPE ETFs continue to attract regular flows of fresh capital. Solana-related products lost an additional $4.38 million.

So this is not a general collapse of the crypto industry. It's a simple reorganization of the fleets on the high seas. Crypto investors are not deserting the ocean permanently. They simply reposition their sails where the wind seems strongest.

The waves calm down, the big arms stay the course

Eric Balchunas, analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, throws a stone in the pond. The billions recently released from bitcoin ETFs seem totally insignificant to him. Remember that the industry has approximately $100 billion in assets under management. The sequence of 4.4 billion withdrawals made the lookouts tremble. However, it represents less than 5% of the sector's total outstandings.

Cumulative inflows since the launch of spot bitcoin ETFs still reach 55 billion. On June 12, flows even started to rise sharply again. IBIT alone captured $57.7 million that day. This represents approximately 907 bitcoin purchased in a single trading session.

Guides for navigating the crypto market

  • 79.5 billion in net assets for bitcoin ETFs.
  • 57.7 million captured by IBIT on June 12.
  • Less than 5% of exits compared to 100 billion.
  • 63,869 dollars for the price of bitcoin currently.
  • 55 billion cumulative entries since launch.

Crypto ETFs are going through turbulence, not a destructive cyclone. However, bitcoin could soon experience its biggest correction since 2021. A 10.3% drop in mining difficulty fuels these fears and is reminiscent of the market's darkest periods.
