On September 1, 2024, Cardano reached a major milestone with the activation of the “Chang” upgrade. This highly anticipated upgrade marks a shift towards decentralized governance for the crypto network. From now on, ADA token holders will have the opportunity to actively participate in decision-making by electing representatives and voting on development proposals.
Crypto: ADA holders take power!
Cardano Improvement Proposal (CIP-1694) outlines the new community governance structure and establishes three governance bodies led by crypto users: the Constitutional Committee, Delegated Representatives (dReps), and Staking Pool Operators (SPOs). This transition to decentralized governance means that Cardano’s three founding entities—the Cardano Foundation, Input Output Global (IOHK), and Emurgo—will no longer hold the keys to trigger chain upgrades or hard forks.
The Chang update is happening in two phases. The first phase, already underway, introduces an Interim Constitutional Committee to temporarily oversee Cardano’s governance. This phase is designed to be conservative, limiting the committee’s power to make changes to the blockchain’s code while the rest of the governance model falls into place. The second phase, scheduled for 90 days, will fully empower the new governance bodies.
A crucial update for Cardano
This crypto upgrade is a crucial milestone in Cardano’s roadmap, marking the beginning of the Voltaire era – a phase focused on achieving full decentralization, which has been in the works since Cardano’s inception. According to Giorgio Zinetti, CTO of the Cardano Foundation, “Once everyone is on board and well-informed, they will be ready to actively participate in governance.”
Cardano’s “Chang” upgrade represents a significant step towards decentralized governance, giving ADA token holders an active role in the future of the network. This move reinforces Cardano’s alignment with the crypto industry’s decentralized ethos and could also be seen as a strategy to protect itself from regulators by giving ADA additional utility.
