Surojit Chatterjee, Chief Product Officer of Coinbase, decides to leave the company after three years of what he describes as an exciting, sometimes tumultuous journey. This bitcoin enthusiast nostalgically recalls his journey within the American exchange and briefly announces the rest of his journey.

A mutually agreed decision

It is on his LinkedIn account that Surojit Chatterjee announces his departure from Coinbase after having officiated there as chief product officer for three years. He had joined the exchange in February 2020. At that time, he recalls, the platform only listed some 25 assets. Today, Coinbase lists 200 assets. Surojit Chatterjee proudly measures the progress made. At the same time, he commends the effort made by all the teams that made this feat possible.

Surojit Chatterjee integrates a small crypto platform. He leaves a publicly traded company, considered the most important of the “compliant exchanges”. This position benefits the platform as the cryptocurrency market matures. Surojit Chatterjee was involved in all of this. This departure is not a unilateral decision, he says. He mutually agreed with Coinbase management that it was time for him to explore new horizons.

Surojit Chatterjee, who is this bitcoin enthusiast?

Surojit Chatterjee got into cryptos in 2016 following the launch of India’s demonetization plan in 2016. At that time, Chatterjee was serving as a product manager at Flipkart, an Indian e-commerce company. With this policy of demonetization, Chatterjee realized that the government was controlling citizens’ money. So he turned to bitcoin to enjoy economic freedom. He buys his first bitcoin which marks the beginning of a growing passion.

Since that first foray into the cryptosphere and throughout his time at Coinbase, Chatterjee has always made economic freedom his credo. He also praises cryptos, this new financial system that facilitates transactions. He particularly likes making it easy for Coinbase users to send, receive, pay, borrow, lend, or save money.

Going from chief product officer to consultant

Surojit Chatterjee admits it, he says, he is not leaving Coinbase lightly. But he needs to take time for himself to enjoy his family. He also evokes the sudden loss of his father for which he did not even have time to become aware of the tragedy. But it is time for him to take a little rest, well deserved according to his terms. In his announcement, he expresses his gratitude to the entire Coinbase family for this “incredible experience”.

Even if he jumps ship, Surojit Chatterjee will continue to work with the exchange as consultant. “I look forward to continuing to help Coinbase grow by serving as an advisor to the company’s co-founder and CEO, Brian Armstrong. […] I look forward to continuing as an advisor to Brian and the management team and continuing the difficult but essential work of creating more economic freedom and building a better Internet for all”he concludes.

His adventure at Coinbase is coming to an end, but Surojit Chatterjee continues to pursue the same goal he has always set himself: to offer a economic freedom to the greatest number. Far too many people don’t have access to bank accounts and he remains convinced that crypto is the solution to that.
