Clean your Antminer

Here is how to clean your antminer, whatsminer or even your avalon for increased performance.

Dust, the miner’s enemy

Regularly cleaning your antminer (Bitmain) or whatsminer (MicroBT) helps keep their hashrate high. Extending their lifespan is another good reason to take care of your ASICs.

If the air sucked in by your miner is not filtered, it will be better to clean it every month. You will know that a cleanup is needed if the hashrate shows a deviation of more than 5% from the factory settings.

The best way to clean an ASIC bitcoin miner is to use an air compressor and its high pressure air gun. This blows away accumulated dust from the chassis, hash boards and fans. Bitmain’s guide recommends an air pressure of around 0.7 ±0.05 MegaPascal (MPa) to avoid the risk of detaching certain electronic components.

In general, it is not necessary to disassemble the machine for monthly dusting. However, it will have to be done if the ambient humidity (to be avoided) sticks the dust to the miner. It will then be necessary to remove the hash boards, dismantle the fans and gently brush everything with a dry antistatic brush.

Avoid the vacuum cleaner which will certainly be sucked violently against the components. You could easily desolder a heatsink or other component. And since you’re there, don’t hesitate to regularly vacuum the room where your minors are.

Your miner will occasionally need a deep clean. Once or twice a year. It depends on the air quality. Rather twice a year if you don’t filter the air.

Thoroughly clean your antminer

Professionals use ultrasonic cleaning machines for electronics. Ultrasonic baths are very effective in removing possible solder deposits after changing chips that no longer work.

Here is a video of a hash board cleaning using an ultrasonic tank. It is of course also possible to use elbow grease with 99% isopropyl alcohol.

Do not use water. The mineral salts and ions it contains could deposit and cause short circuits. If your machines are leaking for x reasons, rinse them with 99% isopropyl alcohol. Here is a video showing how wash your ASICs manually.

Despite regular maintenance, miners can break down. If there is a problem, first check the network, reset the miner, check the cables and power supply or else reduce the ambient temperature.
