ChatGPT banned at Apple: When AI worries the tech giant

Revolutionary, but controversial, the conversational AI ChatGPT also raises fears. The tool is definitely useful. But its use worries because of security concerns. Entities refusing the use of ChatGPT have multiplied in recent weeks.

Ban on ChatGPT for staff amid data leak risks

Apple employees are no longer allowed to use the ChatGPT chatbot in their activities. The American multinational has formalized its decision Friday, May 19, via an internal memo to its staff.

The document sets out the rationale for this choice. The company fears for its technological security. Fears linked to the risk of leakage of its most strategic data. These would therefore be concerns related to the potential loss of its competitive advantage.

From this point of view, we therefore understand why Apple’s decision to ban ChatGPT to its employees is not restrictive. It gets along with other technological tools of the same kind. This is particularly the case of the AI tool Copilot. It is an application supported by Microsoft and used to automate the writing of software code.

But Apple’s decision could be justified from a purely practical point of view. Indeed, at the beginning of the month, Time Cook, the boss of Apple, announced that the company was considering integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its products. For this, the best strategy would be to launch your own AI program. And the company is actively working on it.

Apple thus joins, in this dynamic, other leading technology firms such as the South Korean company Samsung. Like Apple, the company has restricted the use of AI tools to its employees under penalty of “disciplinary measures which may go as far as dismissal”.

Apple and Samsung are not the only companies to have taken such measures. Others, such as JPMorgan, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup have also taken similar measures. For Apple in particular, isn’t this choice ultimately relevant and ambitious given the projects that the company has for the crypto market?
