Brazil, one of the founding countries of BRICS, has just severed its bilateral relations with Israel. In question, a position taken by Brazilian President Lula da Silva on the war waged by the Jewish state in the Gaza Strip.

Gaza war causes Israel’s break with BRICS member

Brazil, an influential member of BRICS, has severed its diplomatic relations with the State of Israel. This is a major shift in global geopolitics, especially as it further accentuates the BRICS position on the war in Gaza.

I have to say that this diplomatic break Major crisis that has emerged between Israel and the BRICS member, which has also recalled its ambassador, does not occur by chance. It was a statement by Brazilian leader Lula da Silva on Israeli offensives in the Gaza Strip that ignited the fuse.

Operations which, according to remarks by the Brazilian president made during a recent summit, are comparable to the Nazi genocide during the Second World War. The difference, according to him, is that they do not have “no equivalent in other historical moments”.

The comments sparked outrage in Israel and prompted Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz to declare Lula da Silva “persona non grata”. Which prohibits him from entering the country.

Will the BRICS take more positions?

This unprecedented decision marks a significant escalation in already tense relations between the two countries. This, in a context where the ongoing conflict in Gaza is already a source of international tension, with world leaders expressing different views on the subject.

Certainly, Lula da Silva’s remarks appear to be somewhat inflammatory. But they are fundamentally not new. As a reminder, South Africa, another leading BRICS member, has made the same criticisms of the government of Israel.

The country has also gone much further than the criticisms of the Brazilian president which outrage the Israelis. Indeed, seizing the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the rainbow nation, on December 29, 2023, filed a complaint against Israel, for “genocide” which it leads to Gaza.

Given this historical precedent, to say the least, now reinforced by the declarations of the Brazilian president, are we moving towards a more assertive position for the BRICS in the conflict in Gaza? The question deserves to be asked in the current context of redefinition of the balance of geopolitical forces.
