Even today, the Bitcoin block size war divides the crypto community. This tug-of-war between proponents of small blocks and big blocks highlights fundamental questions about scalability, decentralization, and the very future of Bitcoin.
The battle for scalability of the Bitcoin crypto network
At the heart of Bitcoin's block size war was the question of scalability. According to Jonathan Bier, proponents of small blocks feared that increasing block sizes would harm decentralization of the Bitcoin network. They therefore recommended layer 2 solutions, such as Lightning Network, to increase transaction capacity without changing the block size.
A supporter of large blocks, Roger Ver maintained that increasing the size of blocks was necessary so that Bitcoin could:
- manage a larger number of transactions,
- become a viable means of payment.
He and his allies argued that small blocks were strangling Bitcoin's adoption and threatening its relevance.
Zk-SNARKs: A glimmer of hope in the block size war?
In the middle of this struggle, a new technology is born: Zk-SNARKs. It offers potential to resolve the dilemma of scalability and decentralization of the Bitcoin network. Proponents of small blocks see Zk-SNARKs as a way to achieve layer 2 scalability without increasing the block size.
The integration of Zk-SNARKs into Bitcoin has given rise to solutions like RSK and Aztec. These guarantee confidential and scalable transactions on the Bitcoin blockchain.
Important clarification: Zk-SNARKs are currently the subject of active research and development. Their widespread adoption on the Bitcoin network could take time and require additional technical solutions. Additionally, they don’t seem to be factored into discussions about Bitcoin’s future roadmap at all.
The quest for balance between scalability and decentralization continues. It will certainly shape the future of Bitcoin.
