Bitcoin Pizza Day: the Success Story of a Pizza at 10,000 BTC

Every May 22 since 2010, 13 years ago today, the crypto industry has celebrated Bitcoin Pizza Day. An anniversary that commemorates the very first material transaction made using crypto. Each Bitcoin Pizza Day is unique. The 13e edition of this event is just as important.

Back to its origins

In 2009, a year after its launch by Satoshi Nakamoto, bitcoin (BTC) was still very little known to the general public. Obviously, the situation of the asset then was that of any new asset today. That is to say, it was not really worth a nail.

It is in this context that the programmer Laszlo Hanyecz, the inventor of GPU mining, had a brilliant idea. That of offering to buy two pizzas each worth 25 dollars, for 10,000 BTC. The rest is history.

Indeed, following the announcement he had made on the Bitcointalk forum, the programmer was quick to find a buyer. Thus was carried out the very first transaction carried out exclusively with a cryptocurrency!

Of course, with 10,000 bitcoins, we have more than enough to afford certain prosperity, the asset being worth around $27,000 today. But the big advantage of this deal at the time was to have made the BTC concrete enough to attract users. This contributed to its notoriety.

Bitcoin Pizza Day, 2023 edition: what’s planned?

Beyond the duty of memory, the tradition of the Bitcoin ecosystem is that the Bitcoin Pizza Day serve as a springboard. To promote services that value the relevance of blockchain and cryptos in particular.

The 2023 edition of Bitcoin Pizza Day should thus be an opportunity for several crypto firms to initiate atypical events. The Binance platform, for example, announced its BinancePizza, a series of events highlighting its products.

The same is true for the Bitget exchange, which has notably planned numerous campaigns dedicated to its users, old and new alike. The same goes for Bitrefill, which celebrates Bitcoin Pizza Day by sponsoring local get-togethers around the flagship crypto.
