A study was recently conducted concerning the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the French economy. It indicates that by 2030, French GDP will experience massive growth thanks to generative AI. The study seems optimistic, but it raises some concerns.
Generative AI, the engine of French economic growth
France is reportedly on the verge of stratospheric economic growth thanks to the strategic adoption of AI. This is what emerges from recent projections on the use of generative AI.
According to these forecaststhe sustained use of this technology alone could propel French GDP by 250 to 400 billion euros by 2030. This is at least an increase of more than 10% compared to current levels.
This revelation results from an exhaustive study carried out by an interministerial committee of 15 experts, and submitted to President Emmanuel Macron, Wednesday March 13, 2024. These were based on the points of view of more than 7,000 citizens.
The study addresses employment concerns with the emergence of AI. And the first results on this subject suggest generally nuanced perspectives. They suggest minimal risk for the majority of jobs. These are resistant to the automation of tasks.
But concerns remain
Certainly, this first conclusion of the report offers a semblance of job security amid the AI revolution. But this sentiment flies in the face of prevailing concerns, highlighting the resilience of human-centered roles in the face of technological progress.
Indeed, contrary to the report’s optimistic outlook, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) issues a warning regarding 60% of highly qualified positions. These could be disrupted by AI-driven innovations.
Separately, Adam Slater, chief economist at Oxford Economics, raises concerns about alleged productivity gains attributed to AI. According to him, realizing these benefits requires substantial initial investments.
Not to mention that concerted efforts are necessary for the qualification of the workforce. This whole process has serious financial consequences for businesses, especially smaller ones. In essence, a careful balance between innovation and inclusion must be struck with the development of AI. This is done by ensuring that the dividends of progress are equitably distributed throughout society.
