The market for tokens linked to artificial intelligence (AI) is booming and could reach a total capitalization of $60 billion by 2025, according to Gracy Chen, CEO of crypto exchange Bitget. This prediction highlights the growing importance of AI agents in the cryptocurrency ecosystem and their potential to transform various aspects of decentralized finance (DeFi).
Crypto: Exponential growth of AI tokens
AI tokens, which are currently valued at around $15 billion in market capitalization, saw rapid growth in the last quarter of 2024. A dramatic 222% increase, which was primarily fueled by the launch of new currencies like Goatseus Maximus (GOAT) on the Solana blockchain. Solana is now the dominant blockchain for artificial intelligence agents, representing 56.48% of the market with a capitalization of $8.44 billion.
However, Gracy Chen cautions that the technology is not yet mature enough for large-scale investments due to the need for human control. She recommends that crypto investors favor tokens backed by practical solutions, such as those replacing a programmer or automating specific tasks.
Future outlook
Industry executives expect AI agents to play a larger role within decentralized communities in 2025. JD Seraphine, CEO of Web3 AI developer Raiinmaker, predicts that artificial intelligence agents will will transform Web3, with crypto trading as an early use case. By the end of 2025, it is estimated that 1 million AI agents will populate blockchain networksgenerating millions of dollars of on-chain activity every week.
However, Vitalik Buterin proposes slowing down the development of AI by limiting computing resources, in order to give humanity time to better understand and manage the potential risks associated with this technology.
Despite impressive growth, the market capitalization of AI tokens is still expected to be lower than that of memecoins, which are expected to experience a new phase of growth this year. Nonetheless, the rise of AI tokens represents a significant opportunity for crypto investors and could redefine the future of decentralized finance.
