A new chapter for BRICS: The alliance will expand to 17 members in 2024

BRICS has co-opted several countries this year. A historic geopolitical moment which is expected to continue in 2024. An official from the group of countries revealed that six new countries will join the organization next year.

The six countries joining BRICS in 2024 are not yet known

Following its recent annual summit, BRICS unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to expand the alliance to six countries. The latest news is that this dynamic will continue next year.

To believe recent statements by Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Indian Foreign Minister, BRICS is committed to expanding its reach. They reached consensus on expanding the group at their next plenary meeting.

According to Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, a group of six new states should join BRICS in 2024. The official, however, did not specify which countries are affected by this upcoming extension.

For the moment, we know that at least 40 countries are interested in joining the BRICS. A total from which they first retained Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Egypt and Argentina. The latter state having declined the offer upon the arrival of Javier Milei to power.

BRICS determined to reshape global geopolitics?

This development seems in line with the objective pursued by BRICS so far. Namely to promote a multipolar and more inclusive world order. The aim being to challenge the domination exercised by the small number of Western nations.

The addition of a new conglomerate of states can be seen as one of the means to achieve this end. The exit of the dollar, the launch of a common currency, possibly with a crypto option, being other levers activated by the BRICS to realize their plan.

Speaking on this development, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar highlighted the alliance’s commitment to challenging the current Westernized global power structure. A situation which has so far hampered, if not almost destroyed, the legitimate interests of other peoples.

Finally, the organization seems to have found the formula necessary to maintain the union within it. Not very long ago, certain risks of division of the BRICS carried by suspicions of a desire for hegemony by China had filtered out. A hypothetical division that would suit the Americans, many of whom do not perceive BRICS as a threat to the United States.
