Predictive crypto-related contracts generated a record weekly volume of $2.7 billion on Kalshi and Polymarket. Very short-term bets on the price of bitcoin concentrate most of this activity, now higher than that of all categories excluding sports.

In brief
- Kalshi and Polymarket crypto prediction markets reach weekly record of $2.7 billion.
- Kalshi’s Bitcoin contracts alone are worth over $2 billion.
- Betting on the BTC price at fifteen minutes strongly stimulates trading.
- Cryptos become the second most active category on both platforms, behind sports.
- This success comes with risks related to bitcoin volatility and short-term speculation.
Bitcoin Contracts Dominate Record 2.7 Billion
The notional volume of crypto prediction markets reached $2.7 billion in one week in mid-October. This amount adds the value of all contracts exchanged on Kalshi and Polymarket, including when the same position changes ownership several times.
Kalshi’s Bitcoin contracts alone have produced over $2 billion. The most active product asks users to predict whether BTC will go up or down over the next fifteen minutes. A new deadline therefore appears several times a day.
The main data show the weight of bitcoin in this record:
- Kalshi and Polymarket total $2.7 billion in crypto contracts;
- Kalshi’s Bitcoin markets alone exceed $2 billion;
- BTC thus represents more than 74% of the combined crypto volume;
- Polymarket also offers fifteen-minute bitcoin contracts;
- The American branch of Polymarket generated between $92 and $101 million in this format during its first full week;
- Cryptos occupy second place on both platforms, behind sports.
This increase does not mean that $2.7 billion in new money has been deposited. A trader can buy and then sell the same contract several times. Each operation increases the notional volume without creating an equivalent capital inflow.
Fifteen-minute deadlines accelerate this phenomenon. The same user can open dozens of positions per day, unlike a market dedicated to an election or a central bank decision which remains open for several weeks.
Short bets turn the BTC price into an event
Predictive markets are based on contracts that typically range in price from $0 to $1. A contract that quotes $0.60 reflects, in theory, a 60% probability attributed to the event. It pays $1 if the predicted outcome comes true and expires worthless otherwise.
In the case of BTC, users do not always seek to estimate its long-term price. They take a position on a binary question: will the price be higher or lower than its current level in fifteen minutes?
This format looks like a very short-lived derivative product. It attracts traders accustomed to perpetual contracts, but its structure simplifies the decision. The user chooses a direction without directly managing leverage, liquidation price or indefinite holding period.
The multiplication of these contracts also allows platforms to retain the attention of traders between two major political or economic events. Bitcoin operates twenty-four hours a day and provides a continuous stream of verifiable results.
The record is part of a wider expansion by Kalshi. The platform recorded $19.03 billion in contracts across all categories between October 5 and 11. Its daily volume has at times reached around $4.4 billion.
A commercial success that raises several risks
The growth of Bitcoin contracts offers platforms a business less dependent on elections and sporting competitions. It is also of interest to crypto exchanges, which are looking for new sources of income in the face of the slowdown in certain spot markets.
However, this activity carries high risks. Over a fifteen minute period, the BTC price may react to a large order, liquidation, or liquidity issue. The result then depends more on market noise than on fundamental analysis.
The price displayed by the contract does not constitute a certain forecast either. Its reliability depends on the number of participants, the depth of the order book and the rules used to determine the final bitcoin price.
Kalshi and the US branch of Polymarket operate under a federal framework linked to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Several States nevertheless contest certain predictive contracts, especially those devoted to sport, which they assimilate to betting.
The record of 2.7 billion dollars therefore confirms the public’s attraction to the rapid movements of bitcoin. Above all, it reveals the capacity of platforms to transform each variation of BTC into a continuous succession of new speculative markets.
