In brief

  • Bitcoin falls to $86,000, crossing a sensitive technical threshold which alerts analysts.
  • This drop brings BTC closer to a critical zone between $84,000 and $73,000, called “max pain”.
  • These levels correspond to the acquisition costs of BlackRock (IBIT) and Strategy, with an increased risk of sell-offs.
  • Uncertainty around the Fed's next decision is increasing pressure on the crypto market.

Bitcoin between $84,000 and $73,000: a zone of maximum tension

Bitcoin's recent correction to $86,000 brings it dangerously close to what some analysts refer to as a zone of “max bread”.

For André Dragosch, director of research at Bitwise Europe, this pivotal zone is between $84,000, the average acquisition cost of BlackRock's ETF (IBIT), and $73,000, that of Strategy's Bitcoin treasury.

“The max pain zone is located between two levels of average capital acquisition cost: “$84,000 for IBIT, the BlackRock ETF, and around $73,000 for Strategy”he explained.

These key technical levels come with increased risks of a sell-off if the market continues its decline. Here is the major elements to remember regarding this critical area:

  • $84,000: Average purchase level of the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), BlackRock ETF. As this threshold approaches, institutional investors begin to reconsider their positions, amplifying the risk of massive redemptions;
  • $73,000: the average acquisition price of Bitcoin cash from Strategy, a company largely exposed to the volatility of BTC. If this threshold is reached, this could increase pressure on the stock and the market;
  • Dragosch believes that a cycle bottom could materialize in this area, indicating a form of forced cleansing of overly optimistic positions;
  • Entering this range could aggravate the nervousness of ETF holders and trigger a spiral of liquidations, or withdrawals typical of periods of capitulation.

This “zone of maximum pain” reflects a form of psychological threshold for major market players. If it were to be crossed sustainably, it could mark a technical low point, but also test the resilience of institutional demand. For the moment, the market is operating on the edge of this zone, in a climate of extreme tension.

A worrying conjunction

If the tension around technical levels is palpable, it is exacerbated by worrying signals from the side of capital flows.

The iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), an ETF launched by BlackRock, recorded its worst day of net outflows last Tuesday, with $523 million in withdrawals. This movement is part of a general trend: cumulative outflows from all spot Bitcoin ETFs reached $3.3 billion in the space of one month, or approximately 3.5% of all assets under management.

This dynamic is aggravated by the situation of Strategy, whose net asset value (NAV) has fallen below the threshold of 1. In other words, the market is now valuing its shares below the value in bitcoin that they represent, a signal of marked distrust and a gradual drying up of liquidity.

Added to this is macroeconomic uncertainty. After a government shutdown delayed key employment data, the next FOMC meeting in December will be decisive. So, the probability of a rate cut has fallen to 41.8%leaving the risk of a monetary status quo which could prolong the tension on risky markets.

In such a context, the short-term outlook for bitcoin remains constrained by market conditions. If liquidity remains constrained, BTC's trajectory could oscillate between $60,000 and $80,000 until the end of the year. However, some contrary signals are emerging: stablecoin reserves on exchange platforms reach a record high of $72 billion, a level historically associated with the beginnings of strong bullish recoveries.
