Ethereum faces a dramatic fall in its income from the costs of Blob, falling to their lowest levels since 2025. This 95 % drop raised concerns about the economic future of the network, highlighting the challenges linked to its dependence on L2 scaling solutions.

Ethereum: a dizzying fall in blob costs
For the week ending on March 30, 2025, Ethereum generated only 3.18 ETH (around 6,000 USD), marking a decrease of 73 % compared to the previous week. This figure also represents a fall of more than 95 % compared to the Blob revenues of the week of March 16, 2024, when the costs exceeded 84 ETH. This spectacular drop illustrates the economic difficulties encountered by the network after the Dencun update.

Launched in March 2024, Dencun Upgrade moved data from layer 2 transactions (L2) to temporary “blobs” stored out of chain, in order to reduce costs for users. However, this migration has also led to a drastic reduction in the income generated by the costs of Blob, of the order of 95 %, according to the Asset Manager Vaneck.
What solutions for the future?
This drop in income raises concerns about Ethereum's dependence on L2 scaling solutions for its transaction processing capacity. The network's profitability model seems to be more and more fragile, especially since the volumes of transactions on L2 must increase by more than 22,000 times for the costs of Blob to compensate for income from traditional transaction costs.
Despite this disturbing situation, Ethereum does not allow himself to be killed. The network is already preparing its Pectra update, planned for this year, which could radically change the way in which the space of the blobs is allocated. The objective is to develop the network economy while maximizing its scalability to capture a larger market share.
The fall in the costs of Ethereum Blob therefore highlights disputed strategic choices, in particular its dependence on L2 solutions and its management of Blob costs. This changed the Crypto network, making Ethereum obsolete as long -term investment. Will he be able to get up?
