The management of public finances is a sensitive subject, especially when it is carried by a figure as polarizing as Elon Musk. Since his appointment at the head of the Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE), the entrepreneur promises a drastic reduction in federal spending to avoid “bankruptcy of the United States”. Thus, he announced that he had saved $ 8 billion thanks to the cancellation of a government contract. A spectacular figure, but quickly disputed by several media: the contract in question was in reality only 8 million dollars.

A colossal gap between the announcement and reality
As soon as the DOGE announced by Elon Musk, the news had the effect of a bomb. A federal contract initially estimated at 8 billion dollars had just been canceled, resulting in a massive economy for the administration. According to official declarations, this contract linked immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to the company D&G Support Services, responsible for providing “technical support and programming services” at the office of diversity and civil rights of the agency.
However, the new York Times and Cnn quickly questioned the veracity of these figures. After investigation, it appeared that the amount of the contract was largely overestimated. It was not an agreement at 8 billion dollars, but a contract of real value of 8 million. The confusion would come from an erroneous figure taken into account by the DOGE, which would have based its calculation on the theoretical ceiling of the contract, fixed in 2022, rather than on the amount actually engaged.
Faced with these revelations, the administration of the DOGE was quick to discreetly rectify the shot. The official DOGE website has updated its data, and now has an economy of 8 million and no longer 8 billion. However, this correction was carried out without explicitly recognizing the initial error, which accentuated criticism on the management and transparency of the department.
Pressure budget management
If this error is perceived as technical clumsiness by some, others see it as a deliberate attempt to manipulate. A former federal official described the entire “completely fallacious” operation, and believes that Musk was looking to artificially inflate his balance sheet to justify his budget cut policy. This is not the first time that the savings announced by the DOGE have closely scrutinized: out of the more than 1,000 canceled contracts, around 250 come from the USAID, an agency whose funding was frozen under the Trump administration .
Such errors, whether voluntary or not, ask a fundamental question about the rigor of budgetary decisions taken by Musk. By wanting to display spectacular figures, the administration of the DOGE takes the risk of weakening its credibility and opening the door to new controversies. If Musk's objective is to impose stricter financial management, the means employed to achieve it could ultimately serve its own cause.
The case also provides the difficulty of a large -scale budgetary reform, where each announcement must be carefully checked. With such a precedent, any new economy announced by the DOGE will be scrutinized with extreme caution, both by the press and by government institutions. It remains to be seen whether Musk will be able to adjust his approach or if he will persist in a powerful and risky communication.
