We know so far that many countries have asked to join the BRICS. Among them, several African countries, but not only. There are also a number of states in the Middle East. But according to the latest news, at least five Asian countries, namely Japan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Thailand and Singapore, would also like to join the alliance in 2024.
The negotiations of the 5 Asian countries to join the BRICS
It is an open secret that BRICS plans to expand its influence in terms of the number of member states this year. In any case, information has circulated that several countries, 6 to be exact, should be co-opted at the next alliance summit.
The latest news is that 5 Asian states are showing signs of wanting to be part of this cohort of new BRICS members. These include Japan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Thailand and Singapore.
The data show that each of its countries, as far as it is concerned, is pulling the strings to possibly give itself chances. Thus, Singapore, Japan and Indonesia are actively intensifying their ties with China, which could use its influence in their favor.
As for Bangladesh, the country maintains leading diplomatic relations with Brazil. The expansion of trade and the strengthening of bilateral relations were even discussed during a meeting of the foreign ministers of the two countries.
As for Thailand, it signed a declaration with the States forming the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) aimed at reducing the dollar. This is for the benefit of local currencies. The country is more than determined to join BRICS after missing the boat in 2023.
Countries as strategic as each other
If we are an observer, we will quickly realize that the desire of these Asian countries to join the BRICS occurs in a very specific context. That of a desire to facilitate trade and establish a new reserve currency against the dollar.
And to achieve this, each of these countries has a potential to highlight, knowing that the co-optation of one country over another will depend on key interests. In any case those useful for achieving the BRICS objectives of leaving the dollar to promote a multipolar world.
As we saw with the wave of integrated countries last year, mainly oil-producing countries, the new countries admitted will be eminently strategic. Singapore, for example, is a global financial, commercial and technological center.
The same could be said of Japan which constitutes the 4e economy of the globe behind Germany, China and the United States. As the largest economy in ASEAN, and 16th economy in the world with growth of more than 5.3% since the Asian crisis of 1997, Indonesia is not to be outdone.
Just like Bangladesh and Thailand, each of which has a card to play to join the alliance. This is just confirmation of a trend where the battle to join BRICS is intensifying more than ever.
