Bitcoin: Fall of the hashrate, the phantom threat weighing on its price

The hash rate of the Bitcoin network has just reached a new historic record, exceeding for the first time the symbolic milestone of 500 million terrahashes per second. However, some experts warn of a risk of a sudden reversal. A sudden drop in the hashrate would weaken the security of the network and cause the price of Bitcoin to plummet.

Stratospheric Hashrate: a cause for concern?

This new record demonstrates the growing power allocated to Bitcoin mining. However, it conceals a flaw: the still too high concentration of hashrate in the hands of a few players and its dependence on seasonal energy sources such as hydroelectricity.

Indeed, a significant part of the world’s mines depend on temporary energy surpluses. However, this cheap electricity has its limits. Its production could fall during periods of drought, causing many mining operations to close.

Catastrophic consequences for Bitcoin

If the hashrate were to be divided by two or three, the consequences would be dramatic. With mining difficulty always calibrated at 500 exahashes/s, the block validation process would suddenly become much less energy intensive.

This would then make a “51%” attack aimed at fraudulently controlling more than half of this reduced computing power tempting. Above all, confidence in Bitcoin would collapse, causing it to fall to unprecedented lows.

Driven by a record hashrate, Bitcoin has never seemed so robust. But this indicator actually masks a weakness: excessive dependence on Chinese mining and unstable electricity. A shaky ecosystem that could implode without warning.

An accelerated energy transition is therefore urgently needed. Even if it means temporarily stabilizing the hashrate, priority must be given to the sustainability and geographic distribution of mining farms. At this price alone, Bitcoin will be able to calmly continue its upward trajectory.
