Uniswap Surpasses Coinbase in Crypto Trade Volume: CZ Satisfaction!

Decentralized finance continues to expand, led by Uniswap. The flagship DeFi platform achieved an impressive feat by processing nearly $110 billion in crypto transactions in the second quarter, overtaking Binance’s major rival Coinbase. A performance that elicited an enthusiastic response from CZ, the CEO of Binance.

Uniswap beats Coinbase: DeFi wins the battle in the crypto sector

Uniswap, the first decentralized crypto exchange (DEX), has managed to maintain a consistent superiority over Coinbase, the main US exchange, in terms of spot volume throughout 2023. CZ, the CEO of Binance, commented on this achievement by saying that “DeFi is taking over”, thus underlining the growing importance of decentralized finance.

According to numbers shared by Ryan Rasmussen, a researcher at digital asset management specialist Bitwise, Uniswap processed nearly $110 billion in transactions in the second quarter, surpassing the $90 billion handled by Coinbase.

This trend continued from the first quarter, where Uniswap’s quarterly trading volume exceeded that of Coinbase. The two platforms handled approximately $155 billion and $145 billion in trades respectively.

Nonetheless, Coinbase saw a more significant decline in its spot trading activity during the market downturn. Its volume fell by 83% compared to the fourth quarter of 2021, from $540 billion to a much lower value. At the same time, Uniswap’s volume fell by half from $235 billion over the same period.

Tenacity of decentralized protocols in the face of the bear market

This data highlights the tenacity of major decentralized protocols in the face of the Bear Market extension. While the 2022 bear market has taken a toll on centralized businesses (Exchanges, Lenders, and VCs), decentralized protocols have retained their resilience. This difficult period has strengthened the case for adopting protocols based on computer code rather than the choices of ordinary people.

Despite the boom in trading this year, the UNI token fell 10% in 2023, remaining well below its all-time high in May 2021.

The appeal of Uniswap finds its explanation in the improvements of the platform through the introduction of new functionalities. In June, Uniswap unveiled the code for its later version, v4. This iteration incorporates limit orders, automated fee income allocation for liquidity providers, and customizable plugins.

Additionally, Uniswap v4 pools can also operate as Time Weighted Market Makers (TWAMMs), giving traders the flexibility to gradually execute large orders.

Overall, Uniswap’s rise to the top of crypto trading volume reflects the exponential growth of decentralized finance in the financial world. The platform remains at the forefront of innovation to meet the evolving needs of traders and investors, cementing its position as the leader of the DeFi revolution.
